Our History

The Story of Bates

During the closing years of the 19th century, Edward Bates opened up a hat shop on Sloane Street. In short order, however, he had moved to the centre of the well-dressed gentleman’s world, Jermyn Street in St James’, where it has maintained a presence since 1898. After many years of successful business, Bates moved to Hilditch & Key, and is now settled in its new premises alongside the shirtmaker.
